Psychiatry or Psychology: what’s the difference?

We’re often asked to define the difference between Psychology and Psychiatry. So here’s a quick guide to help you choose the service you need:

Psychology is the study of people. The discipline pays particular attention to how we think, act, react and interact.  It focuses on the thoughts, feelings and motivations that have an impact on our behaviour.  Primarily, it’s concerned with the standard functioning of the mind, so it’s used to examine an individual’s capabilities such as learning, memory and child development.

Psychologists are not usually medically qualified, and only a small proportion of people with psychology degrees will progress to working with patients.

Psychiatry is a medical field concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental health conditions, including substance misuse.  Psychiatrists are medical Doctors who have qualified in Psychiatry - often combining a broad caseload with specialist expertise and research.

Psychiatrists are qualified to prescribe medication and recommend other forms of treatment.  They help with a wide range of mental health conditions – for example:

Anxiety – Phobias - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - Personality Disorders - Schizophrenia – Paranoia - Depression - Bipolar Disorder - Anorexia – Bulimia - Substance Misuse – Insomnia
